| A | 4.00 | 80–100% |

| B+ | 3.33 | 70–74% |
| B | 3.00 | 65–69% |
| B- | 2.67 | 60–64% |
| C+ | 2.33 | 55–59% |

Second Class Upper Honours | 3.00–3.66 |
Second Class Lower Honours | 2.50–2.99 |
Third Class Honours | 2.00–2.49 |

Malaysian public universities operate on a 4-point GPA scale standardised under the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) framework, adopted by Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), UTM, UiTM and all major public higher education institutions. While similar to North American 4.0 scales, it contains unique local rules critical for international applications, credential evaluation and employment.

Calculated by multiplying each course’s grade point by its credit hours, summing all values, then dividing by total registered credit hours for the semester — weighted average for a single term.
CGPA covers all completed semesters across full undergraduate study. Most public universities only use the latest retake grade for failed modules in CGPA calculation, while original failing records remain on transcripts. CGPA refreshes and prints on transcript after every semester.
A semester GPA of 3.50+ with minimum 12 credit hours qualifies for Dean’s List, awarded per single semester. Some universities also offer cumulative Dean’s List for consistent CGPA ≥3.50 throughout study.
Students with CGPA below 2.00 are placed on probation, required to consult academic advisors and face credit-hour restrictions. Persistent CGPA under 2.00 may lead to suspension or dismissal.

First Class Honours (CGPA ≥3.67) is equivalent to Distinction and highly competitive for postgraduate admission and careers.
MUET is a standardised English proficiency exam run by the Malaysian Examinations Council, separate from GPA and mandatory for most English-taught programmes. Results range Band 1 (lowest) to Band 6 (highest), valid for 5 years.

Private institutions including Taylor’s, Sunway, HELP do not fully follow MQA grade bands: some use 4.33 scales, others only show raw percentages without grade points. International branch campuses (Monash Malaysia, Nottingham Malaysia) adopt parent UK/Australian grading systems instead of local MQA 4.0 CGPA.
Always confirm whether your university uses MQA-aligned standards for credential evaluation, postgraduate applications or professional licensing.
